Meet Our Board

Liz Greenberger
Liz GreenbergerFounding Board Member & President
Liz is the Founding Director of RowLA. For the past five years she has worked with first generation to college minority students in the public schools through a project called Tech4Success. She has been active in the public school system for over 15 years and was recently honored by the City of Santa Monica for her work. In the 1980’s Liz served in the Reagan White House in the National Security Council as a policy analyst focused on the Middle East. She is a rower and coxswain as well as a mother of three grown children, all involved in watersports.
Erin Berman

Erin, having degrees in social sciences and secondary school education, is dedicated to working with people and building stronger communities through service. She has served as a volunteer and taken leadership roles in many not for profit organizations and served on her Community Council. Erin has also had the privilege to serve on the Executive Boards of the Junior Women’s Club, National Charity League and Anne Banning Auxiliary of Assistance League of Southern California for Operation School Bell. She brings energy and passion to her commitments and loves building programs and putting people together! Erin lives happily with her husband, three dogs and two daughters; one working professionally in public health and one currently in high school. Her family actively enjoys rowing and sailing.
Debra Shaw

Growing up as the daughter of a Naval aviator, Debra went to nine different schools ranging from Newfoundland to Guam with many states in between. She received a BA in Secondary Education from Western Washington University and continued her post-graduate work at the University of Washington. After college, Debra taught in South America, Japan and Italy. She became a stay-at-home mother after the birth of her first child. Debra has been involved in many school and community activities including President of the Parents’ Association at The John Thomas Dye School, past President of the Friends of Robinson Gardens and is an Executive Board member of the Beverly Hills Garden Club. Debra has a passion for education, historical preservation, gardens, cooking and traveling. She lives with her husband and two daughters, one is a student at Yale University and the other, a high school student, rows for MAC Junior rowing club.
Emily Cruse

While an undergraduate at Stanford University, Emily developed an appreciation for the integration of sports into academic pursuits. She joins the RowLA Board of Directors after moving back to Los Angeles from her career in the financial services industry at Goldman Sachs. Emily has spent the past two years in the UCLA Anderson School of Management MBA program and she recently joined Paramount Pictures in their Financial Planning Department.
Carey Goble
Carey GobleBoard Member
Carey is a Physician Assistant in a busy orthopaedic and sports medicine practice in Santa Monica. She makes time to train as a rower and is part of the competitive women master’s team of the Los Angeles Rowing Club. Fitness and nutrition have always been part of her life and since her days as a graduate student at USC, she has successfully integrated her vocational and avocational interests. Carey mentors many of the RowLA girls interested in pursuing careers in the medical field.
Joanie Freckmann
Joanie FreckmannAdvisory Board Member
Joanie was born and raised in Los Angeles. She earned her undergraduate degree from USC and a Master’s degree from Mt. St. Mary’s College. Her career in the Los Angeles Unified School system spans forty years, working as a teacher, special education administrator, and principal.
Much of her work was in the inner city communities of Los Angeles and she saw first hand the importance of reaching out to students who have fewer opportunities.
Joanie is the trustee of a scholarship fund that provides grants to needy and worthy Los Angeles girls attending over 30 different California colleges and universities.  
Cassie Rotman
Cassie RotmanAdvisory Board Member
Cassie Rotman has served on the RowLA Advisory Board since 2010. She began her rowing career in high school at the Brooks Academy and followed that with four years of collegiate rowing at Colgate University where she studied International Relations. Her professional career has been in the financial services field and recently she worked at the US Space and Rocket Center traveling around the world on projects related to space education. Cassie will be a full time graduate student at the MIT Sloan School of Management commencing in September 2013. She will continue her work for RowLA assisting with capacity building and development initiatives and acting as the east coast RowLA representative.
John Hertzer
John HertzerBoard Member
John graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in economics, and earned an MBA from UCLA Anderson where he graduated with honors. He currently works in the Portfolio Management group of Dimensional Fund Advisors in Santa Monica.

John began his rowing career with the Oakland Strokes, where he won two state championships and a silver medal at Nationals. At Dartmouth, he was on the varsity lightweight team, and as a senior was elected Captain. John also served as President of the Dartmouth Rowing Club, which includes all varsity men’s and women’s teams. In 2004, John won the collegiate lightweight division at CRASH-Bs. He was invited to and attended the selection camp for the 2004 US Men’s Lightweight 8.

Lindsey Boland
Lindsey BolandBoard Member
Lindsey first set foot in a rowing shell as part of a summer program prior to 8th grade and learned how to both ​sweep row and scull over the next few years. She continued rowing for her first two years at Williams College, where she was a member of the 2002 NCAA Division III championship winning team.

Lindsey currently finds time to hop on an indoor rower or in the occasional boat at Los Angeles Rowing Club while also pursuing a host of athletic interests.  Lindsey is a Product Owner and Brand Manager at Riot Games, and has been living in Santa Monica and working in the video game industry since earning her MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. 

Alex Osborne
Alex OsborneBoard Member

Alex is currently a Product Manager of Monetization at Snapchat in Venice. He developed a passion for rowing while attending Stanford University. While at Stanford, Alex finished 2nd and 3rd in the country in the Varsity 8+ at the National Championships, was a 3-time All Pac-10 rower and finished his senior year as the 2009 Pac-10 Rower of the Year.

In 2007, he began his six year career on the US National Team, which ultimately concluded as a member of the Men’s Quadruple Sculls at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Alex loves to go for late afternoon paddles with girls from RowLA, and does his best to not mess up their impeccable balance.

Melissa Merritt
Melissa MerrittBoard Member

Although a Los Angeles native, Melissa began rowing in high school after tagging along with her dad to practices at the Greater Columbus Rowing Association in Ohio. Those fortuitous outings led to two summers on the US Junior Team and to Yale, where she rowed in the Varsity 8 all four years. She was also a member of the US Under 23 Women’s Four that won gold in Copenhagen in 2000. Melissa returned to Los Angeles in 2007 and has been working in the film industry ever since, as an assistant prop master and props buyer. She can’t wait until her daughter is old enough to join RowLA!

Glenn Ochal
Glenn OchalBoard Member
Glenn began rowing as a freshman at Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia, PA. He decided to try out because his older brother was on the rowing team. Glenn immediately became hooked and highly attracted to the ultimate team aspect of the sport. He continued to row at Princeton University and graduated in 2008 with a degree in Economics.
After college, Glenn was invited to train with the US National Team. He competed at five world championships and the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games, earning a 3rd and 4th place respectively. After the Olympics, Glenn started working for Rauxa, the largest woman-owned marketing company in the US, and in 2017, he joined the RowLA Board of Directors.
